Crispy Honey Chilli Potato
Honey Chilli potatoes is a very popular Chinese cuisine.
This crispy sweet and spicy dish is a combination of French fries along with chilli sauce and honey. I have used vegetables like bell pepper and spring onions along with lots of sesame seed which gives it a nutty flavour.
Let’s see how to make this delicious finger licking recipe.
Preparation time : 15 mins
Cook time : 30 mins
Serves 4 pax
Ingredients :
For French fries
2 Large sized potatoes peeled and cut in French fries shape
Salt as per taste
1 cup All purpose flour/Maida
1/2 cup Cornflour
Oil for deep frying
For Sauce
1 tbsp Sesame oil/Cooking oil
1 tsp Ginger finely chopped
1 tsp Garlic finely chopped
1 cup Spring Onion
1/2 Capsicum
1 tsp Ginger garlic paste
3 tbsp Red Chilli Sauce
1 tbsp soya sauce
1 tbsp Tomato sauce
1/2 tsp pepper powder
1/2 tsp Kashmiri Red chilli powder
1 tsp Cornflour
1 tsp White Sesame seed
1 tbsp Honey
Pinch of salt (if required)
Method
- Wash peel and cut potatoes in French fries shape
- After cutting them immerse them in water so that it doesn’t turn dark in colour
- Boil water add little salt to it and cook these potatoes so that it retains it shapes . Just ensure do not overcook them or else the French fries may lose its shape.
- Immediately drain the boiling water in a strainer and keep the boiled potato strips separate
- Now for coating , take a bowl add all purpose flour, cornflour, little oil and salt as per taste. To this add water to form a thick consistency of batter
- To this batter add all the Potato strips and coat them well
- Heat oil in a wok for deep frying . Here we are going to double fry the potatoes so as to get that perfect crispy and crunchy French fries
- While frying the fries for the first time Just ensure you fry them until they are very light brown
- Now when you fry them for the second time the fries should turn nice golden brown in colour. At this stage you will see that the French fries have turned super crunchy
- Keep all the French fries aside and now let’s make the sauce immediately
- In a heavy bottom pan add sesame oil preferably or any cooking oil
- Once the oil is hot add finely chopped ginger garlic, capsicum and spring onions (I have used the onions of spring onions you can use red onions as well). Sauté them well
- Now add red chilli, tomato and soya sauce along with pepper powder and little red chilli powder(optional) . I have used Kashmiri red chilli powder to avoid artificial colour as it gives the sauce a natural red colour
- Take 1/2 cup water to this add 1 tsp cornflour mix them well and pour it in the sauce so as to give it a thick texture
- Next add sesame seeds and salt if required. I would suggest to taste the sauce before adding salt since all the sauces which we have used already has salt content in it
- After 5 mins switch off the flame and add honey to the sauce. Honey will give a sweet taste to this spicy and tangy sauce
- Leave the sauce to cool down and then add all the French fries. Give it a nice mix and here your sweet tangy spicy crispy Honey Chilli Potato is ready to be served
Garnish with spring onions and roasted Sesame seeds
Tips and note
- After cutting the potatoes dip them in water so as to avoid blackening of the potatoes
- If you have over cooked the potatoes while boiling immediately take them of the pot and keep it under running cold water for a while. This will bring down the temperature immediately
- To get that crispy crunchy taste of French fries just ensure that the sauce has cooled down before you add the French fries to it. It will become soggy and soft if you add the French fries to hot sauce

3.Now for coating , take a bowl add all purpose flour, cornflour, little oil and salt as per taste. To this add water to form a thick consistency of batter
4.Coat the boiled potato strips
5.Heat oil in a wok for deep frying, while frying the fries for the first time just ensure you fry them until they are very light brown
6.Now when you fry them for the second time , the french fries will turn golden brown and crispy.Drain off the excess oil and keep it aside
7.In a heavy bottom pan add sesame oil , finely chopped ginger garlic,spring onions & capsicum. Saute well
8.Now add red chilli, tomato and soya sauce along with pepper powder and little red chilli
9.Take 1/2 cup water to this add 1 tsp cornflour mix them well and pour it in the sauce
10.Now to this mixture add white sesame seeds & salt (if required)
11.Switch off the flame and add honey to the sauce
12. Once the sauce gets cooled down add french fries
13.Mix well
14. Serve hot Crispy Honey Chilli Potato with fried rice or as it is
